Past And Present Fashion Colliding To Create The Future Of Fashion

1. Are new trends a replay on history?

Fashionable Bag

We have all made cringe-worthy fashion choices that will come back to haunt us, and while we hope such trends will never return, they more than likely will as many of our current high street ‘new arrivals’ will show.

Take a look at some of today’s most popular fashion trends and see how everyone’s favourite fashionistas have adapted these styles into their lifestyle.

The term ‘MOM jeans’ to describe high waisted, loose fitting jeans was coined in between the denim’s periods of popularity due to the thought that they were ill-fitting and unflattering to the female physique.

This style of denim was popular in the 80’s and 90’s with Levi’s advertising their own in a ‘Sears Wish Book’ in 1989.

The jeans also featured in 80’s/90’s television, notably the sitcom Friends in which characters Rachel Green and Monica Geller were dressed in the loose denim in several of the show’s earlier episodes.

Today’s celebrities have started to make MOM jeans cool again – a favourite with model Emily Ratakowski in particular.

Despite the restrictions and stigma placed on women in terms of their fashion choices, the crop top was actually quite popular during this decade. The style of top was often paired with very high waisted skirts to give the impression of an hour glass figure for those who didn’t have one and to accentuate the shape of those who did.

Today, crop tops are trending again, and with similar ideas to women of the 40’s – many pair them with high waisted jeans, trousers, shorts or skirts.

With an endless amount of styles, crop tops have definitely made their way into most girls’ wardrobes.

Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez are just two celebrities out of many who are avid wearers of the crop top, whether it’s casual wear or occasion wear.

The typical fashion cycle goes through five stages according to fashiondesignscope. com. First, designers introduce a style, that style is often worn by chosen “fashion leaders,” such as high profile celebrities. When a celebrity wears a new style it gets attention from fans and the media. The hype translates into mass production of the style. The public’s interest develops the style into a popular trend, as more people adapt the look. Eventually, the excitement dies down as the market becomes saturated and people become bored. Form there a style is replaced by something new and more exciting, typically introduced by the same famous people and designers.

The famous have led the fashion industry for years. “Before the civil war, Paris was the fashion center,” said Robin Kloosterman, a historical reenactment and fashion enthusiast. She proposed that, before movie stars introduced the trends, it was royalty and the nobility. This is a concept called trickle down theory, originally created by Thorstein Veblen in 1899. Trickle down theory states that lower classes will try and mimic the wealthy and influential by adapting their styles. These styles are originally introduced at higher prices than the masses can afford and with time become available to the general public.

Kloosterman recalls the time when women would get their fashion magazines every month or two and adapt the styles for themselves on their sewing machines. In a way, this was faster than today’s method. The internet makes new styles instantly known, but most of us must wait for manufacturers to start producing the things we want to buy. If they ever do. And don’t worry, if you miss a style you like it will probably reappear in stores a few years down the road.

If you don’t think fashion trends repeat just ask any relative or friend over 30, if you’re over 30, think back to your teen years and you might notice some fashion similarities. The repeat is not always glaringly obvious, old ideas are often reshaped or iconic articles of clothing are combined with other trends. For example, the famous bell bottoms reappeared more subtly as flare pants, while we see a resurgence of leggings and neon hues from the 80’s (minus the leg warmers). Some items come back into style as retro or vintage trends. According to www. insideoutstylblog. com, a fashion fad will only last 3 to 12 months, a trend will last 1 to 5 years and a classic will be around for 5 to 10 years. Then if you wait around 20 years the trend will hit the scene again.

In the next few years this pattern may begin to change. Consumers have a little more style freedom with the increase in online shopping, since online stores are not limited by the trends available at the local mall. Popular looks are quickly picked up by social media and shared with the world, and consumers are quick to adopt the new look. Unfortunately, with online shopping it’s hard to choose something that is certain to fit. According to Peder Stubert’s Huffington Post article, technology could solve this deterrent. Some online retailers are introducing functions that alert the buyer to size differences between past purchases. Other businesses are developing “virtual fitting,” a technology that can either use an internet product to cross reference present clothes or use 3D computer body modeling. Technology could make it simpler and more convenient to shop online.

With so many different styles, the challenge is what to do with all of it. There is a whole world of fashion at our fingertips, both in style and out of style. There are more tools to create your own distinct look than ever before. Old styles can easily be recreated or reimagined by consumers. As Kloosterman said, “It’s more than knowing what the clothes are it’s how they wore them. ” That information can be used to bring back an old look or modernize a out of style article of clothing. The tools are out there, what are you going to do with them?.

2. New and oddly satisfying beauty products and techniques

Lipstick

We’re not sure why some of these exist, honestly – but we’re still weirdly intrigued! Check out some of the strangest beauty tools and makeup products we’ve come across lately that may or may not work any miracles, but they’ll definitely keep things interesting.

This green lipstick uses some sort of witchcraft to appear pink on your lips! It adjusts to your pH and skin tone like a mood ring to create the perfect shade. Of course, you could always just use an actual pink lipstick, but this is way more fun. It comes in a blush version, too!

It might look like a creepy hand, but this is actually a diffuser! Designed specifically for curly hair, it attaches to the end of a hair dryer to help create definition and shape, and prevent frizz.

TBH, we had zero idea what we were looking at the first time we saw this. Although the shape is super weird and confusing, it’s actually a beauty roller that uses high-frequency sonic vibration to uplift skin on your face, neck, chest, legs, and pretty much anywhere.

Do you really need a specific mask for your boobs? Probably not, but this viral Instagram product has us curious anyway. It won’t reset the clock, but it will leave skin feeling softer, help clear up acne, and even prevent under-boob sweat.

Is that a ring pop?! Nope, it’s a holder for your nail polish. It comes in a zillion colors and will keep your bottle nearby while you paint on a fresh mani. It’s totally unnecessary, and yet somehow we definitely need one.

This mask might look terrifying, but it actually lets you get an LED treatment at home any time. Just a few minutes of wear can help stimulate collagen production, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and treat dark spots and blemishes. Just maybe don’t wear it around the kids.

Peeling off a charcoal mask is so painful. This one is just as Insta-friendly, and without the ouch! The iron-infused liquid is designed to be removed with a magnet tool that’s super satisfying to use. Oh, and it’ll make your skin look firmer and more radiant, too.

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to have an exoskeleton, try this foot peel. A few days after you’ve applied the treatment, your feet will literally molt their outer layer of skin. But, after a few days of shedding (ew), your feet will emerge softer than ever.

Why spend time painting on your eyebrows when you can stamp them on instead? We can’t speak to its effectiveness, so use it at your own risk, but it would certainly be faster than creating the perfect arch shape with a pencil.

There’s no need for Botox when you have these literal suction cups to plump up your lips. At first we thought they were a joke, but then we looked at the comments on Amazon, and apparently people are obsessed! With just 15 to 30 seconds of use, they give you Kylie-status lips for a few hours at a time.

The beauty industry is constantly evolving. And with that growth comes a multitude of new-and sometimes unusual-products designed to address a wide range of cosmetic concerns.

From charcoal toothpaste to pine tar soap and snail slime serum, we’ve identified 10 slightly peculiar (but totally effective and typically all-natural) products to help you look, smell and feel your very best. Give them a try and let us know what you think!

Wash away your worries-and impurities-with a soothing seaweed bath! You’re going to love this restorative, nutrient-rich skin solution, made from “organic bladderwrack seaweed sustainably hand-harvested from the pristine ocean waters off the coast of Maine.”

Applying snail essence to your face may seem strange, but the slimy mucin is purported to hydrate skin, reduce wrinkles and scarring and help prevent signs of aging. Escargot facial, anyone?

Want to decrease the cellulite appearance? For that, there’s a soap! Maine seaweed (as used in the tub above!), Arabica coffee (for exfoliating), moisturizing coconut oil and charcoal, among others, are ingredients.

Are you looking for an all-natural, hypoallergenic deodorant that will really eliminate odor? Simply wet this non-staining fragrance-free Amazing Thai Crystal Deodorant Stone, apply it to your underarms and go about your day-no sweat!

Skip the substances! Instead, with this strong paste, which includes a mixture of activated charcoal, coconut oil and bentonite clay, clean, polish, white and detoxify your teeth. For even the most sensitive smiles, it is fluoride-free and perfect.

For both nursing mothers and infants, the “first organic, all natural, plant-based balm created without lanolin” is safe. Non-irritating nipple butter helps prevent sore and cracked nipples, so your baby experience won’t be impeded by pain!

There’s beards in, great time! This 100% natural citrus and spice oil can assist to attain fashionable facial hair and keep “a smooth, soft, subtle shine.” It is also good to condition the skin under the whiskers!

Perfect your Hairgurt curls with prebiotics, super botanicals and quinoa! Not only is this 5- to 10-minute mask specifically developed to “assist bounce, manageability and curl elasticity enhance,” it does not contain any damaging colors, fragrances, sulphites or parabens.

When you think about hitting the shower, thick, sticky tar from pine trees probably doesn’t immediately spring to mind. But this versatile bar soap, made from “100 percent plant-based pine tar” will “deeply cleanse, deodorize and moisturize from head to toe.” Use it for “showering, shampooing and facial grooming!”

3. Workout Clothes….But make it fashion

Yoga

If your New Year’s resolution was to get into shape, congratulations! You are part of the 65 percent of people with the same goal for 2019 – and, honestly, more power to you. While we generally procrastinate on physical activity, the forecasted fitness apparel trends are giving us all the motivation we need to finally make exercise a priority.

Whether you’re looking for cute gym outfits to work out in, or just comfy, chic clothes that really stress the “leisure” in athleisure trends, you’re guaranteed to see these activewear styles everywhere this year.

By all accounts, 2018 was the year of the logo – from our FILA shoes to our Gucci belts, we couldn’t stop flexing labels on our wearables. This year, the trend is only getting stronger, making its way fully and unapologetically into our workout wear. Watch as a single Nike swoop becomes an allover pattern, and less-touted brands like Champion find their signature Cs on sweatshirts and yoga pants everywhere.

Think you might be eligible for Medicare? Learn the basics of the program and what you need to get started.

Earlier this year, bike shorts almost looked like they were going the way of Pokemon Go and “on fleek” – the trend graveyard – but instead they shocked us all by going totally mainstream instead. And, since we’ve all decided this is appropriate attire from here on out, why not wiggle into a pair yourself? Their high, control-top waists and thigh gap-shaping leg openings are so flattering that even if we look back on this era wondering what we were doing in cycling shorts (and skinny sunglasses), well, at least we’ll look good in the photos.

I can feel it – 2019 is going to be our year. No more fake pockets in jeans and, seriously, no more pocket-less leggings. In fact, let’s all come to terms with the fact that leggings really are pants and give them the functional trimmings they deserve, not least of which is a place to store a smartphone.

We’re excited about the super high-waisted fit we’re beginning to see on leggings for a few reasons. One, the stretchy fabric across our midsections offers the best control-top without the annoying rolling or pinching of tights. Two, we can finally rock Adriana Lima’s just-came-from-the-gym look in a sports bras and leggings with nothing on top, and we’ll look and feel great doing it.

It’s creeped into our party clothes, our office attire, and even onto Anne Hathaway’s Golden Globes dress, so it only makes sense that it would finally reach our gym gear. Ideally this feline print gives you the sass and energy you need to hit the weights room, but if you take this set to brunch, we wouldn’t be mad either.

We love athleisure as much as we love all the pretty dresses, so it’s basically a dream come true that workout dresses are becoming a thing. Outdoor Voices brought them back into our collective consciousness this summer, and we’re starting to see a ton of brands follow suit with their own covetable versions.
